To me friendship is like coming home to someone, being able to share all your thoughts and feelings, not matter how crazy or weird they might seem. Because you know, that no matter what, that true friend will always love you the way you are....
True friendship is something special, that you need to maintain, but this has to come from both sides. For me it is even harder being so far away. Before I went to Australia, there where some people I considered 'friends', but it turned out to be other wise. It is a lot harder to maintain friendships across the world, and although we fortunately have Skype, Facebook and all kinds of other ways to keep in touch, people change.
Everyone gains new experience, meets new people and develop themselves more as individuals. For example I had a friend that I knew since I was about 6, but after high school and when I went to Australia everything changed. We used to see each pretty much everyday and hang out in school, but after that for some reason, she wasn't able to stay in touch. I tried to 'save' the friendship, but it is always a two way street and in the end I realized there was no point. I would sent messages, and don't get any response or a really short vague one, so now I kind of accepted that it is the way it is. I still sent her a message every now and then or a postcard, but the friendship we used to have is no longer there..
With my best friend in Holland it is the complete opposite. When I was in Australia we mainly stayed in touch trough Facebook, we Skyped sometimes, but not more then about 4 times in about 10 months. But when we did Skype, it felt like nothing had changed and we were just talking the way we used to. Even when I came home, there was no awkwardness or anything and we basically picked up where we left off. That is what true friendship is, even if you haven't seen each other for a long period of time, being reunited feels like coming home.
