New York City

It has been a while, but I went on a trip to New York in February, and have been so busy that I had no time to write about it. I had a great time there, even though it was really cold. This will probably be a pretty long post, but I will tell you about everything we did in The Big Apple.

In February I went to New York with another Au pair in the area. We actually found each other on Facebook. She posted something about wanting to see Lady Gaga in New York and was looking for people to join her. I was interested, so messaged her back, we met up and organised the trip. Unfortunately the Lady Gaga concert got canceled, but we had a great time!

We left on the 21st in the evening and came back the 26th. We stayed in a hostel and tried to do as many things as possible in those few days. One thing I can tell you; we came back more tired then when we went there. Here is a summary of all the amazing things we did, enjoy reading ;)

We left on February 21st, which was a Thursday. We met at the airport and our flight was leaving at 10.40 pm. They had not enough place for all the carry-on, so I had to check in my bag. We landed in New York on Friday morning at 7.00 am. We tried to sleep on the flight, but that didn't really work out, so when we landed for us it felt like it was still Thursday. We first needed to pick up my bag and then we went out to find our the hostel. We couldn't check in till after 3.00 pm, but we wanted to drop off our lugage. We stayed at the International Student Center, on West 88th Street, luckily for us there was a subway nearby. We left our bags there and decided to go to Central Park. It was little bit disappointing because it was winter and there was not too much to see. Then we went to have lunch somewhere and continued walking to Times Square (yes people, WALKING!). After a while we were so cold we went to Forever 21 and spend some time there, and then we went to the Rockefeller building. Helen, the other Au pair, had been in New York before and already saw the view from Rockefeller, so we decided we rather did the Empire State Building. After that we walked back to the hostel. We actually walked the whole day, and didn't use the subway. Just to give you an idea of how much we walked; the hostel was on 88th street and Rockefeller is on 34th street and we walked there and back, and that's not even counting the other stops we made. We were back at the hostel at 6.00 pm and checked in, it felt like we were up for 48 hours, so we managed to stay up till 8.30 pm  and then we went to bed.

Saturday morning we were the last ones to get up, and we were going to meet Helen's friend who was an Au pair close to New York. We made a whole list of things we wanted to do that day, but first we went to the M&M shop on Times Square. Next we went to the New York Public Library, and Grand Central. Sandra, Helen's friend, said we should go to a cupcake store called 'Crumbs Bake' and it was delicious, I got a cupcake called 'white hot chocolate'. After that we actually went shopping at Forever21 because it was raining all day. In the evening we wanted to go to the Empire State Building, but when we got there they told us there was too much fog, and we wouldn't able to see anything, so we went back to the hostel, and yet again we walked everywhere that day.

On Sunday we met Sandra again adn we took the subway to the Highline, which wasn't that good, but I'm not exactly sure if we were at the right place. From there we went to the Chelsea Market, I read online that they had 'drop' and 'stroopwafels', so I wanted to have a look there. Eventually we didn't find the 'stroopwafels', but we found 'dropveters'. After that we went to the 'Carrie Bradshaw' appartment, the Swedish candy store (Helen and Sandra are Swedish) and then to the 'Friends' appartment. After that we went to the World Trade Center site and I was kind of suprised that you could still see the things that happened there after 12 years. The memorial was really beautiful and in the visitor center you could watch videos of people talking about their experiences. Next on the list were the Flat Iron Building and the Empire State building, and this time it wasn't foggy. We went up to the 86th floor and it was so worth the money! We went in the evening when it was dark and you could see all the lights from the city, it was so beautyful! When we went outside to take pictures, it was so windy and super cold, so we quickly took some pictures and went back inside. After this amazing experience we went back to the hostel.

In the morning we wanted to get some discounted tickets for Broadway, so we got up early to be there in time. Once we got there we found out they don't actually start selling the discounted tickets till 3.00 pm, so that kind of messed up out plans. Instead we took the Staten Island Ferry and saw the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We just saw it from the ferry, but we also got a really nice view on New York. Then we went to Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge and Chinatown. By accident we ended up in Little Italy, so that was nice and we had a look around. Then we took the Subway back to Broadway and we got some tickets for Mamma Mia! half price. We had really good seats too, we sat right in the middle which was great! The show was really good and that's something else I can tick of my list. After that we took some more pictures on Times Square and then we went back to the hostel. On Tuesday we didn't do much, because we had to catch our flight in the afternoon. So we just walked around in Central Park and went on our way to the aiport.

This was my trip to New York and it was awesome! I definitely want to go back there during summertime one day tough. We did so many things in such a short period of time, but it was definitely worth it and I will never forget it.

What was your most exciting trip?
